Using your home address for a limited company: what becomes public?

Running a company from home does not mean your home must be its public contact address. A separate address can help you keep company correspondence and home life apart, while giving customers and suppliers a consistent place to send business mail.

The next step depends on whether you are choosing an address before registration or dealing with details already published. Changing a current company address and removing it from old filings are separate tasks. This guide explains how to approach each one.

Which company addresses become public?

Your registered office is public, as is a director’s service address. A director also supplies a usual residential address separately. That residential field is kept off the public register, although specified public authorities and credit-reference agencies can access it.

The distinction matters: supplying your home address in the private residential field does not make it public in the same way as using it for a registered office or service address. See Companies House’s explanation of public and private information.

For a fuller explanation of these roles, see our guide to registered office and business addresses. If you operate as a sole trader, our sole trader address guide covers that different situation.

If you have not registered your company yet

Arrange an alternative address before incorporating if you want to avoid using your home in the public registered-office field. You need permission to use it, and it must meet the registered-office requirements, including the correct registration jurisdiction and arrangements for receiving company post.

Before submitting the application, check each address field individually. Confirm the service covers the company’s registered office and the directors’ service addresses you need. Continue to give accurate residential details where requested; an alternative public address does not replace that requirement.

At CVH, arrange your service and wait for activation confirmation before entering 49 Greek Street on company records. This gives you an agreed address and mail arrangement from the outset.

If your home address is already public

Start by finding out where it appears. Check the company overview, the relevant people’s details and the documents in the filing history. If you are also a person with significant control (PSC), check that separate public service-address entry too. A current overview showing a different address does not tell you what is still visible in older documents.

Then work through these three steps.

1. Update the current public details that need changing

If an active company still uses your home as its registered office, change that before applying to remove it from previous filings. Also check each director’s service address, which may be recorded separately.

Where you remain a serving officer and your home is the current service address, the removal application requires a replacement. If the home is also a single alternative inspection location (SAIL), the official instructions require that address to change first too. Check all the roles involved rather than assuming one change covers them.

2. Identify eligible documents and use the removal process

Individuals can apply using form SR01 to remove eligible home-address appearances from company records. There is a fee for each document listed, so count the relevant filings before applying. The official SR01 page has the current form, fee and submission instructions.

For a former registered office, identify the original filing that supplied your home address, rather than the later filing that changed it away. Record the document type and registration date, and check it against the eligible-document list in the SR01 completion guidance.

Former registered-office addresses can now be eligible; older advice saying they can never be removed is out of date. If your home was still the company’s registered office when it was dissolved, the application must wait until six months after the dissolution date.

3. Check the outcome and any remaining copies

An accepted application affects the documents listed. Depending on the situation, part of the address may remain visible, such as the first half of a UK postcode. Read the Companies House removal guidance for the conditions that apply to you.

It does not erase every copy held elsewhere. Other organisations may have copied public company information; address concerns about their records to those organisations separately. Buying a new address service does not itself remove historic disclosures.

Check the places your business controls

Review your website’s contact page and footer, downloadable brochures, invoice templates and business listings. Decide where the new address is appropriate, update the details you control and keep track of changes requested elsewhere. Preserve any required company disclosures rather than simply deleting address information.

A search result is another place to check, but removing a result does not remove the underlying page. Google explains that distinction and its eligibility limits in its personal-information removal guidance.

This review is also a useful moment to check where correspondence should go. Your public contact address and the destination for forwarded physical mail serve different purposes; choose both around how you work.

Choose an address that also works for your mail

A separate public address is more useful when it gives you a straightforward way to receive and access business mail. Before choosing a provider, confirm which company and individual names are covered, which address uses are included and how you will receive your correspondence.

CVH’s mail packages include company registered-office use where appropriate and service-address use for the subscribing company’s directors, without an extra charge for those directors. Your business mail comes to 49 Greek Street, Soho, London W1D 4EG, with a choice of scanned copies, physical mail forwarding or both.

Monthly and annual packages let you choose an arrangement around your business. Compare the mail packages or talk to our team about the address uses and mail service you need.

Arranging the new address gives you a practical base for future correspondence. Any Companies House removal application or correction to another organisation’s records remains a separate step.
